Royal Caribbean boasted that its Quantum of the Seas is the world's first smartship, Fox News reported.
The main feature of the luxury cruise ship is the radio frequency identification (RFID) bracelets given to each passenger before boarding.
Keeping passengers to the ship's network, the RFID allows them to access their rooms, keep track of their onboard purchases and make tour and dining reservations. Since the RFID bracelets are covered with rubber, they cannot be magnetized unlike traditional magnetic ID cards from other cruise lines.
Aside from catering to on-board amenities, information about activities and reservations booked before departure will be loaded into the high-tech bracelets. These can be monitored by the passengers by using the RFID bracelets with the ship's Royal IQ app, according to WXYZ.
Passengers can interact with the app through the screens located throughout the ship by simply tapping on their bracelets. They can also use the app to track down the location of their luggage and when it will be delivered to their rooms.
The ship's wireless connectivity is made possible by low-orbit communications satellites provided by the tech company O3B Networks. Since these move closer to Earth than other satellites, O3B's internet signals are transmitted directly to Earth.
This means passengers can enjoy high-speed and reliable Internet connection through their personal devices and even use Skype to communicate with their loved ones. They can even play online games with other people from different parts of the globe.
Other features of the ship include the virtual balconies. These are 80-inch, high-resolution screens installed inside staterooms. The screens display video feeds from cameras mounted on the ship's bow and stern, Market Watch reported.
The side-borders of the screens look like balcony doors which provide guests the feeling of looking over a real balcony.
Another feature of the Quantum of the Seas is the Bionic Bar serviced by robotic bartenders. These bartenders, which are actually robotic arms, can mix and serve beverages to passengers.
