In her first interview following her awkward moment with former boyfriend Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev decided to explain why she and her "Vampire Diaries" costar decided to make their break up the center of attention at the Poeple's Choice Award.

According to E! News, the former couple who won the "Best Chemistry" award at the ceremony chose to address their famous split, tackling the elephant in the room.

The 25-year-old said that she addressed the failed relationship with the 34-year-old because "It's just honest," adding, "All it was was just honest. You call a spade a spade."

The brunette starlet admitted that she was the one who came up with the idea to play out the awkward moment with the CW heartthrob.

She said, "I was trying to figure out, like what do you say in that situation?"

She continued, "We were like, well, we're cool, we're friends and costars. He's a great person, I'm a great person...I mean, I think I'm pretty awesome.[Laughs.]

"So it doesn't need to be awkward and I think everyone expected it to be so awkward. We made fun of ourselves and just had fun."

Nina Dobrev also expressed how deeply she still cared about Ian Somerhalder despite their break up following three years of dating.

She said, "If you're with someone for that long, there's obviously the qualities in them that you enjoy and that doesn't change just because you're not together anymore.

"I have an enormous amount of respect and love for him and everyone. That doesn't change, it shouldn't, otherwise why were you with them?"
