Although they had a break up that devastated fans, that didn't stop Nina Dobrev from wishing her former boyfriend and "The Vampire Diaries" costar Ian Somerhalder a happy birthday over the weekend.

According to Entertainment Wise, although the actor celebrated his birthday on December 8th, Dobrev took to her Twitter account on December 9th to send her former love well wishes via social media.

Using his nickname to address him the brunette beauty wrote, "Happy Bday Smouldy! Hope you had a beautiful day filled w/ smiles+gluten free cake!But not too much cake,we're on the CW :P @iansomerhalder"

Meanwhile, Somerhalder used the day to thank his fans and followers on Twitter for the birthday wishes. He wrote, "Thank you EVERYONE for all of these Birthday wishes-it's really special."

He also thanked a special lady in his life as well, his mother. The 35-year-old actor tweeted, "Dear Mom, Thanks for pushing me out into this beautiful,magical&insane world to be challenged,loved and ALIVE.."

Although they have made some progress in their relationship off-screen, on-screen their characters are struggling to keep it together as the actor hinted that in season 5 Elena and Damon may not have a "happy ever after."

Ian Somerhalder explained that at this time his character Damon is very fortunate however, fans shouldn't expect that to last.

The actor explained, "In Mystic Falls he did get her and he's lucky to have that experience but in Mystic Falls..."

He added, "Relationships are hard in life. Relationships are really hard in Mystic Falls because if you don't have conflict, you have no drama. If you have no drama, you have no TV show so relationships don't last that long in Mystic Falls. We are not short on drama."
