When it comes to genital plastic surgery, the number of women going under the knife is rising. New research suggests that adult films could be to blame for why more are turning to vaginal cosmetic procedures.

According to the New York Daily News, experts in the field find that watching X-rated material increases teen girls' and women's desires to change their lady parts. Why?

Simply put, the films confuse females, who think their private parts need to look like the ones onscreen. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists or RCOG reported that in Britain, there's been a fivefold increase in surgeries, which are "medically unnecessary" and can cause serious health problems.

The procedure, known as labiaplasties, is being thought of as the perfect solution to copy what women see in pornography. But women mistake what they see in adult films as being the norm, giving a false sense that they must look like adult film stars.

"The misapprehension arises from the prominence of just one type of 'neat' genital appearance, the type to be found prominently depicted in pornography," said Thomas Baldwin of RCOG's ethics committee to Agence France-Presse.

Turning to surgery or making the decision to get cut on the operating table is a very dangerous one.

"The younger a girl begins her labiaplasty trajectory, the highter the number of operations over her lifetime," wrote researchers, "and the greater the risk of scarring and sensitivity loss."

Surgeries, which surgeons don't recommend for women under age 18, have grown by leaps and bounds in the U.S., too, reported Reuters.
