The Season 3 premiere of the CBS crime drama series "Elementary" was screened for the crowd at New York Comic Con this weekend, and it was revealed that Sherlock Holmes returns to New York with a new apprentice and a renewed interest in working with the NYPD after being fired by London's MI6.

Holmes' new protégé named Kitty Winter is not a likeable character right from the very beginning, but the panel for the series - which was made up of Lucy Liu (Joan Watson), Jonny Lee Miller (Sherlock Holmes), Ophelia Lovibond (Kitty), and Producer John Polson -  said that a lot of things happened to her, and those experiences made Sherlock choose her as his next apprentice, Hypable reported.

Miller 41, said the Kitty "had some not-so-great experiences, which is probably an understatement," according to Mashable.  Her backstory will be revealed in the next few episodes, said the "Trainspotting" actor.

The introduction of Kitty to the show will further affect the dynamic between Sherlock and Joan, who at the end of Season 2 had a big misunderstanding. Joan moved out of the Brownstone apartment they shared, and that caused the detective took a job with MI6 in London.

"I think the tension that is built in the first episode is an interesting way to layer what's going to happen in Season 3," Liu said at the convention. "[Joan and Sherlock] are fractured, and I'm not sure it's about repairing it but it's about change. And change is hard for everyone."

"I don't think he sees the pain it's caused her," the 45-year-old "Charlie's Angels" actress added. "It's hard to hear you've been replaced in any relationship. It's going to change the way their dynamic is."

In addition, Lovibond said that it was clear in the first episode that Kitty seems to have her own agenda.

Polson revealed that Kitty was inspired by a character featured in the Sherlock Holmes story "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client."

In the upcoming season, Joan is now the NYPD's new private investigator and Captain Gregson (Aidan Quinn) won' let Sherlock resume consulting for the department without permission from his former partner, Broadway World reported.

Aside from Lovibond, Gina Gershon also guest stars as Allison March, a suspected leader of a criminal enterprise.

"Elementary" returns on CBS on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
