Miramax has announced Wednesday, Sept. 3, that it acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the elderly Sherlock tale "Mr. Holmes," and will partner with Roadside Attractions on domestic theatrical distribution of the film, Variety reported.

The British film, which is currently in post-production according to The Hollywood Reporter, is directed by Oscar-winning director Bill Condon from a script written by Jeffrey Hatcher.

Ian McKellen, who is best known for his role as Gandalf the Wizard in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" film series, plays Sherlock Holmes in the film. Laura Linney also stars, Cinema Blend reported.

Based on Mitch Cullin's novel "A Slight Trick of the Mind," "Mr. Holmes" is set in 1947 and follows the popular detective as he returns from Japan, where - in search of a plant with powerful restorative qualities - he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Back in his isolated seaside Sussex farmhouse, Holmes faces his retirement tending to his bees with only his housekeeper Mrs. Munor (Linney) and her young son, Roger (Milo Parker) as his companions.

Struggling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon Roger as he revisits an unsolved case which forced him into retirement. In the process, the sleuth learns a little something about life and love.

Additional cast includes Hattie Morahan, Patrick Kennedy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Roger Allam Philip Davis, and Frances de la Tour.

"'Mr. Holmes' is a smart, exciting film that has attracted the highest-caliber director, cast and producers, and it is a perfect fit for Miramax," said Thomas J. Barrack, Jr., chairman of Miramax in a statement. "We are very pleased to acquire U.S. distribution rights to 'Mr. Holmes' and to have the talented and insightful Roadside Attractions team as our partner for U.S. theatrical distribution."

"Bill Condon and Ian McKellen's collaboration on 'Gods and Monsters' continues to inspire us, so we are very excited to join with Miramax in releasing 'Mr. Holmes,' their fantastic take on the world's favorite master sleuth," said Roadside Attractions' Co-President Eric d'Arbeloff in the same statement.

"Mr. Holmes" is scheduled to be released in 2015.
