The United States gained a 2-1 victory over Ghana on Monday, June 16 in a Group G opening round World Cup match in Brazil after substitute John Brooks scored a goal four minutes from time, CNN reported.
The victory took the U.S. team to second place tying with Germany on points but behind on goal difference.
Before Brooks' goal from a corner kick, Andre Ayew of Ghana equalized the score.
Prior to this, Clint Dempsey of the U.S. scored the sixth quickest goal ever for the U.S. in a World Cup match after netting only 30 seconds into the match, The Guardian reported.
Dempsey broke into the penalty area and stroke home a left-footed shot past sprawling goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey of Ghana, which has on average the youngest team in the football tournament.
"We have a great spirit and (we) fight until the last second. There are undoubtedly things that we need to improve. At the end of the day we got the three points," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said.
After the match, Klinsmann explained that they "needed to push and push and just grind it out" and the U.S. team has "a great spirit" and is "a great sport."
The coach said, "It was a little bit of shock that Jozy got injured, we had to to take (Matt) Besler out because we disn't want to lose him too, so it was a grind but it was a wonderful win at the end of the day."
"Well undoubtedly there are things we need to do better. We had problems keeping the ball, we need to get more into the game, but a lot of that is the merit of Ghana, they are a good team who grind you. At the end of the day we got the three points we so badly wanted and we can move on," Klinsmann added.
In the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, Ghana also eliminated the U.S. by the same 2-1 score line, Fox Sports reported.
