A number of tech companies have dropped their support for the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) due to its controversial stance on the issue of climate change, Huffington Post reported.

Through the persuasion of activists, companies such as Google, Yelp and Facebook separated from the organization that is known for denying the truthfulness and effects of the environmental problem.

For years, ALEC, which is funded by fossil fuel and utility companies, has opposed campaigns by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. government to reverse the effects of global warming, according to The Progressive.

Apart from posting about the myths of global warming on its site, the organization previously stated that the use of renewable energy should be dictated by market trends and not by government policies.

According to Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt, partnering with ALEC was a huge mistake.

"We funded them as part of a political campaign for something unrelated," he said. "I think the consensus within was that sort of a mistake and so we're trying to not do that in the future."

"Everyone understands that climate change is occurring, and the people that are opposed to it are really hurting our children and our grandchildren and making the world a much worse place," he added. "So we should just not align ourselves with such people. They are just literally lying."

Yelp departed from the organization by allowing its membership to expire a couple of months ago. Similarly, Facebook announced that it will not renew its membership when it expires next year, The Guardian reported.

"We reevaluate our membership on an annual basis, and are in that process now," the social media company said in a statement.

"While we have tried to work within ALEC to bring that organization closer to our view on some key issues, it seems unlikely that we will make sufficient progress so we are not likely to renew our membership in 2015," Facebook continued.
