Showtime has officially confirmed that its series, "Nurse Jackie" will end following its upcoming seventh season.

On Wednesday, the network revealed the news via Twitter and wrote, "#NurseJackie is working one last shift! Join us in celebrating and bidding farewell to the 7th & FINAL season in 2015."

Showtime president David Nevin released a statement that read, "Edie is one of our finest actresses. We are so honored to have had her on the network. She creates indelible characters and Nurse Jackie Peyton is no exception. I know this final season will bring her story to a close that will satisfy the every-growing number of loyal viewers who have been entranced, and, at times, appalled by Jackie through the years. I want to thank Edie, the incredible cast of Nurse Jackie and Clyde Phillips and Richie Jackson who have led the show to the success that it is today."

Falco has received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, thanks to her role on the hit Showtime series, according to the Toronto Sun.

Her co-star, Merritt Wever, meanwhile received a Supporting Actress recognition.

"Nurse Jackie" received a go for its seventh season last March, a few months after season 6 ended. Some changes are expected for the series' last season, especially since longtime cast member Peter Facinelli will no longer be joining the team, TV Guide reported.

Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub has been tapped to replace Facinelli and he will be playing the role of ER doctor Bernard Prince. This means that Shalhoub will only be in the series for an entire season.

"Nurse Jackie" averaged 3.4 million weekly viewers during its last season run, making it one of the most successful shows to air on a paid cable network, the NY Daily News noted.

As such, it is quite surprising that the show will come to end just after seven seasons.
