After 8 successful seasons on Thursday Showtime announced Dexter season 8 will be the last one of the series. The cable channel has confirmed that the upcoming eighth season of the serial killer drama will be its last.

According to CNN the announcement had been expected when the president of Showtime's parent company CBS Corp. let it slip in an interview that the network would be ending the series. The cable network took to its Facebook to confirm the last season of "Dexter."

The announcement by Showtime was not all rain and dark skies. The cable network released the first trailer from the final season along with the announcement.

The series stars Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a Miami Police blood-splatter expert who doubles as a serial killer who kills criminals who escape justice.

In the trailer we see Dexter track down his adoptive sister Debra who killed Captain LeGuerta in season 7 in order to keep her brother's secret of being a serial killer safe. Finding her in a grocery store Dexter tell his sister that he has been worried about her being that she has not returned his calls in weeks.

Debra lets her brother know that she is avoiding him "because you made me compromise everything about myself that I care about, and I hate you for it." When Dexter tells his sister that she doesn't mean it she reassures him that she does.

She tells her brother, "I shot the wrong person in that trailer."

Since its debut in 2006 "Dexter" has been a primetime success. The series has earned a total of 25 Emmy Award nominations in its run.

The new original series "Ray Donovan," starring Live Schreiber is set replace "Dexter" following its end.

The final season of "Dexter" begins June 30th at 9p.m. ET/PT.
