CBS has finally announced Monday, Sept. 8, that James Corden will replace Craig Ferguson on "The Late Late Show" in 2015.
"James Corden is a rare entertainment force who combines irresistible charm, warmth and originality with a diverse range of creative instincts and performance talent," CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler said in a statement. "He is the ultimate multi-hyphenate - a writer, creator and performer who is loved and respected in every medium he touches, including theater, comedy, music, film and television."
"James is already a big star in the UK and he's wowed American audiences on Broadway; we're very excited to introduce his considerable and very unique talents to our network television audience on a daily basis," Tassler added.
Corden, 36, who has nearly 4.4 million on Twitter, could finally bring CBS' late-night block to the digital age where it could effectively go head-to-head with ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," NBC's
"Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and "Late Night With Seth Meyers" on attracting more viewers and making buzz - something that Ferguson's run has had poorly achieved, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"I can't describe how thrilled and honored I am to be taking over from the brilliant Craig Ferguson," said Corden in the same statement. "To be asked to host such a prestigious show on America's No. 1 network is hugely exciting. I can't wait to get started, and will do my very best to make a show America will enjoy."
Corden rose to prominence as the co-creator and co-star of the British comedy series "Gavin and Stacey" in 2007, which earned him a BAFTA Award for Best Male Comedy Performer. He also won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Play in 2012 for his performance in "One Man, Two Guvnors" on Broadway.
"The Late Late Show" will not be Corden's first hosting gig. He has hosted the U.K. sports-themed comedy game show, "A League of Their Own," on Sky 1 since 2010, and has also emceed the annual Brit Awards, according to TV Guide.
On Monday night's show, Ferguson, who announced in April that he will be leaving the program at the end of this year, congratulated Corden and put a photo of his predecessor on display in the studio.
"This is what it's gonna look like after Christmas, I'm getting' ready! ... It was announced today, James Corden -- he's British, he's very, very good -- he's going to be the new host of this show," said Ferguson, according to Zap2It. "We're out of here, buddy! Yay! Congratulations to James. We're going to put you up on the mantlepiece."
