Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of this year's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," talk about the creative path they are planning to take for the film's follow-up, "Captain America 3," according to IGN.

Marvel fans and critics alike noticed that the first two "Captain America" films shifted from a typical superhero film into an effective political thriller.

The Russo brothers explained that the shift was brought about by the environment of the main character.

"From a similarity standpoint, you're dealing with -- the way we motivated the [tonal] jump was through the time period shift," Joe Russo explained. "Cap woke up in the modern world, right? Certainly, that's going to carry over."

As to what fans can expect for the third film, the director hinted that movie goers will get to see a similar shift in the story, despite taking place in the same timeline, Franchise Herald reported.

"And the storytelling's still in the modern universe," he said. "From a narrative or tonal standpoint, we don't want to keep delivering the same movie. I know, as a fan, when I go to a film, I prefer to be surprised."

Right now, the brothers are still working on the script for "Captain America 3." Specifically, they are developing the transitional shifts that will be featured in the third film.

Despite the shifts the two are thinking about, Joe mentioned that significant story elements from "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "The Winter Soldier" will make a comeback in "Captain America 3," according to Daily Superhero.

"So we're exploring what those shifts will be and how dramatic they can be," he said. "We started working on Cap 3 probably back in February."

"That's been a lot of the process up to this point, divining what elements of the tone are going to carry over, what elements of the narrative will carry over, and how do we do something that in effect will blow people's minds," the director added.

The currently titled "Captain America 3" film is scheduled to premiere on May 6, 2016.
