Tech company Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced that it is recalling about 6 million computer power cords due to possible fire risks, NBC News reported.

The issue involves 5.6 million cords in the United States alone and another 446,700 units in Canada. The cords were made by HP's manufacturing partner in China. However, reports indicate the manufacturing facility is yet to be identified.

HP issued the recall on Tuesday after receiving 29 reports about the cords melting or burning. Two of those who filed the reports suffered minor burns while 13 said the defective product caused minor property damages.

Upon issuing the recall, HP apologized to its consumers and offered to replace the affected cords for free.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the LS-15 AC cord was sold with the HP and Compaq notebook and mini notebook devices. The company explained that these cords can be identified by the molded mark located on the item's adapter end.

The cords were distributed along with the docking stations and other accessories powered by AC adapters.

The cords, along with the laptop devices were sold in retail stores and online from September 2010 until June 2012, according to HP's official recall statement.

The commission advised owners of the affected products to stop using the cords to avoid potential injuries or property damages. The agency also told the owners to contact HP immediately.

"Customers should immediately stop using and unplug the recalled power cords and contact Hewlett-Packard to order a free replacement," the commission said in a statement.

"Consumers can continue to use the computer on battery power," CPSC added.

HP, however, noted that not all LS-15 cords are affected by the recall, ZDNet reported.

"Not all HP and Compaq notebook and mini notebook PCs were sold with an affected power cord," HP stated. "Please validate the power cord shipped with your notebook or purchased with an accessory, or as a spare."

Consumers can check to see of their power cords are part of the recall by contacting HP.
