Still battling alcohol dependency, "20/20" anchor Elizabeth Vargas returned to rehab on Aug. 26, Saturday while on vacation in California.

In a statement, the 51-year-old ABC News anchor told Page Six, "While on vacation this weekend, I decided to return to a recovery center. As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process."

"I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time," Vargas said.

Recently, Vargas signed a new contract with ABC, which supports her effort to seek further treatment.

"Nothing is more important than Elizabeth's health and well-being and we stand squarely behind her. Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and her family and we look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return," ABC spokesperson Heather Riley said.

While they are currently going through a divorce after 12 years of marriage, Vargas' husband, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Marc Cohn was also said to be supportive of the anchor's battle against alcohol addiction.

Vargas and Cohn have two sons together.

In 2013, Cohn cheated on Vargas while she was in a rehab center, New York Daily News reported.

After 28 days, Vargas left the rehab against doctors' advice.

Earlier this year, Vargas confessed she is an alcoholic in an interview with "Good Morning America" co-anchor George Stephanopoulos.

"It took me a long time to admit that to myself. It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am. The amount of energy I expended keeping that secret and keeping this problem hidden from view was exhausting," Vargas told Stephanopoulos.

When she was young, Vargas suffered daily panic attacks when her mother would leave the house to go to work while her father was serving in the Vietnam War, and these panic attacks carried into adulthood, Daily Mail reported.
