Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) was introduced in the tenth episode of "The Walking Dead" Season 4 titled "Inmates," and while he appeared in four episodes last season, viewers do not know much about him, except for the fact that he claims to have figured out the cause of the zombie outbreak and a potential cure to reverse it. But in a recent interview, McDermitt said that Eugene's backstory will be revealed in Season 5.
"We're really going to jump into the backstory of Eugene a little more in Season 5,"the 36-year-old actor told Wetpaint. "There really wasn't a lot of time to get to know him, but we're going to get to know him a little better, which is great."
"It's always fun to explore the backstory of your character," he added. "But also, just with their interaction with different characters, their personality starts to come out, so, it's always fun to get to know someone based on how they interact with different people."
But it is unlikely that the show will devote an entire episode to tell Eugene's history as the upcoming season is very much different from Season 4, where most episodes only focused on a select group of characters.
"I think it's gonna kinda come organically," he said of his character's backstory. "The writers do such a great job revealing things about people as we go along. What was so great about last season was that they had full episodes dedicated to just a couple of people and, that's cool, but I think the tone of this season is going be a lot more intense. It's pretty wild and it's gonna be a fun ride, so, I don't know that they're going just narrow it down and give Eugene his own episode."
Like Seth Gilliam, whose character, Father Gabriel, will be introduced next season, McDermitt did not know which role he was auditioning for when he read. "They're really tight about that," he told Moviepilot, explaining that he only learned which role he had read for by the time showrunner Scott Gimple called him and revealed that he had read for the role of Eugene. "I was excited. I knew that this [was] the guy I'd want to play," he said.
McDermitt also revealed that he stopped reading the comics once he landed the part. "The comics and the show are so different. I didn't want to be influenced by the comics. I can only work with Eugene in the space the writers and producers give me and I didn't want what I read to change how I might play the character," he explained.
Gilliam also did the same. "I only read the comic book where Father Gabriel was introduced," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I discovered from reading about the show that often times characters' names and journeys are kind of crisscrossed and mismatched, so I thought if I did read too much I might be giving myself a lot of information that would be useless, or just outright wrong."
