Justin Bieber Arrested While On A Retreat With Selena Gomez In Canada, 'Baby' Singer Charged With Assault And Dangerous Driving, His Lawyers Blame The Incident To Paparazzi

Justin Bieber was arrested for assault and dangerous driving while on a "peaceful retreat" with on-again off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez in his home city in Stratford, Ontario, following a collision between a minivan and an ATV that led to a physical altercation involving a photographer.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said that Bieber - who was driving the ATV - and an occupant of the minivan "engaged in a physical altercation" Friday afternoon, Aug. 29, near Stratford, the Associated Press reported.

The 20-year-old Canadian pop star turned himself in to a police station Monday, Sept. 1, and was arrested. But he was then released on a promise to appear in court on Sept. 29, OPP Constable Kees Wijnands said.

Wijnands added that no one was injured as a result of the vehicle collision, but it was uncertain whether someone was harmed from the altercation.

He added that the "As Long As You Love Me" singer was riding on the ATV with a passenger, who is presumed by many to be Gomez, as the two were photographed Friday riding on the four-wheeler.

Bieber's lawyer Brian H. Greenspan revealed that paparazzi were involved in the accident.

"Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's peaceful retreat in Stratford this weekend was unfortunately disrupted by the unwelcome presence of paparazzi," he said in a statement. "This has regrettably resulted in charges of dangerous driving and assault. Mr. Bieber and Ms. Gomez have fully cooperated in the police investigation. We are hopeful that this matter will be quickly resolved.""

Bieber's other lawyer, Roy Black, also slammed photographers for always for following his client.

"Justin, like many celebrities are continually harassed by police," he told People. "Their privacy is shredded and these incidents can become dangerous. While the public is not particular sympathetic, they must realize how difficult these cameramen make their lives."

"So I am not surprised there is a conflict," Black added. "It happens quite often, and as long as the paparazzi are highly paid for their photographs, they will continue."

Meanwhile, attorney Gloria Allred, who is representing the other two people who were involved in the case, said in a statement Tuesday that the accident is "a serious matter that could have an impact on Mr. Bieber's probation status in California," according to NBC News.

Bieber is on probation after he entered a plea deal to settle a case in which he allegedly threw eggs at a neighbor's house in Calabasas in Los Angeles County.

Just late last month, Bieber was also involved in a minor car accident involving a paparazzo that left his sports car scratched.

He was driving his red Ferrari in West Hollywood on Aug. 26 when he noticed a photographer following him in a Prius. Sources told TMZ that the singer was so annoyed that he decided to slam on his brakes. The Prius, however, was not able to stop quickly enough, hitting and scratching the rear of the singer's luxury vehicle.
