Nicholas Winding's "Only God Forgives" starring Ryan Gosling garnered mixed reviews from the Cannes Film Festival crowd, but scored the top prize at the Sydney Film Festival over the weekend.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the controversial revenge thriller made the Danish director into a two-time winner, awarded a $60,000 prize for its "audacious, cutting-edge cinema" in a majority decision. Jury president Hugo Weaving had a lot to say about the judging process.

"After 10 days of captivating and diverse film viewing and passionate conversations, the jury arrived at a majority decision," Weaving said. "In the true spirit of the competition criteria, we award a visually mesmerizing and disturbing film, which polarized our opinions."

The Gosling-led film, which follows the actor as a boxing club owner pressured by his mother to avenge his brother's death in Bangkok, will come out in Australia on Tuesday and in the U.S. on Wednesday.

But the actor only has a few moments to celebrate that victory, for he is immersed in directing his first feature, "How to Catch a Monster" in Detroit.

The film, which he also wrote and cast his girlfriend, Eva Mendes for a role, is described as a "modern-day fairy tale" combining "elements of fantasy, horror and suspense."

According to Moviefone, the hunky new director also recently cast 20-something actor, Iain De Caestecker to play his leading man. The Scottish hunk, who is best known in the UK for his BBC series roles on "The Fades" and "Young James Herriot," will play the 18-year-old son of Christina Hendrick's character, Bones, who is described as "a loner with an active imagination."

The fairly new actor will be a player in the U.S. acting game with his upcoming role on ABC's Marvel and Joss Whedon series, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

We can see him in Gosling's directorial debut in theaters sometime next year.
