Praise for Ryan Gosling's upcoming film was missing in action at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

According to Examiner, the actor made a film, "Only God Forgives," that got a cold reception today. But Gosling was not there to see it, for he skipped the party to continue shooting his directional debut in Detroit.

The Nicholas Winding Refn-directed film follows Gosling playing a boxing club owner, who is pressured by his mother to avenge his brother's murder in Bangkok. The movie has become quite controversial due to some violent and disturbing scenes, and mention of rape. Audience members had mixed reactions, giving both whistles and boos at the film screening. Some people even walked out.

Refn, who directed Gosling in 2011's Cannes Festival Golden film, "Drive," defended his film.

"Art is an act of violence," he said. "Art is about penetration. Art is about speaking to our subconscious and our needs at different levels."

Well, some critics are not buying that.

According to Yahoo Movies, early reviews lean toward being unflattering.

But there are also some praises amongst the bunch for the dark, gritty film.
