Johnny Depp finally revealed his difficulties in splitting with his ex-girlfriend and longtime love of 14 years, Vanessa Paradis last year.

The "Lone Ranger" actor, 50, referred to the last few years of the relationship as a "bit bumpy" with Paradis, who is also the mother of his two children, Lily-Rose, 14, and Jack, 11, according to People.

"At times, [it was] certainly unpleasant, but that's the nature of breakups, I guess, especially when there are kiddies involved," he said to Rolling Stone.

But though he acknowledged their hard time, the screen star still very much cares for his ex-partner. "[A breakup] doesn't stop the fact that you care for that person, and they're the mother of your kids," he said about their split. "You'll always know each other, and you're going to always be in each other's lives because of those kids. You might as well make the best of it."

He also explained how his little ones had kept him sane during the troubling split.

"I had something pretty serious to focus on, really, which was making sure that my kids were going to be cool," he said. "[My kids] have been incredibly understanding. Incredibly strong throughout the whole ordeal. And it's hard on every side. You know, Vanessa's side, certainly not easy. My side, not easy. The kids are the most complicated."

He also opened up about the days leading up to the breakup heard around the world, having said that they spent a lot of time apart, according to CBS News.

In the end, his love for his family is what kept him from drinking to numb the pain of the breakup.

"In terms of the breakup, I definitely wasn't going to rely on the drink...I felt it was my duty to be real clear throughout that," he shared. The blockbuster actor, who frequently dons blue-tinted sunglasses and said he is "kicking 50 right up the a**," felt it was important to be honest and "not pussyfoot around."

Of course, the actor has since moved on to actress Amber Heard though plenty of break up rumors surround the couple.

But despite his relationship troubles and turning the big 5-0, Depp said he is not retiring anytime soon.

"I think while I've got the opportunity and desire and the creative spark to do the things that I can do right now, I should do them," he added. "And then, at a certain point, just take it down to the bare minimum and concentrate on, I guess, living life."
