The People's Republic of China helped boost global sales for sci-fi film "Interstellar" by more than $42 million, giving the movie a total global revenue of over $300 million, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Despite the less than expected opening weekend sales and the fact that the film has not been shown in 3D, "Interstellar" managed to garner a global total of $321.9 million after two weeks of release, thanks to a sudden boost from its Chinese audiences.

The film's showing in China officially made it the strongest opening ever in the country for director Christopher Nolan, as well as becoming Warner Bros.' second overall best debut since its 2013 science fiction monster film "Pacific Rim."

The total international sales of "Interstellar" to date is $224.1 million, which is 31 percent more than Nolan's 2010 hit "Inception," and six percent more than his 2013 film "Gravity," according to Deadline.

Comparing its second weekend to its opening weekend, the film dropped a total sales of 22 percent in sales and only gained IMAX revenue of $12.4 million, which is down 10 percent. It has officially garnered an estimated total of $106 million in its second weekend, with a showing across 21,290 screens in 63 markets, totaling 15.4 million admissions and ticket sales.

With help from China's more than $42 million showing across 7,740 screens, "Interstellar" is not just Nolan's best debut but it also earned the director 55 percent share of the market, Deadline claimed.

The international showing for "Interstellar" is considered good news after it earned $3 million less than Paramount Pictures' expected $50 million box office pull, according to Variety.

Paramount, which is responsible for the film's domestic distribution, saw their film fall short after it debuted at $47.5 million in its opening weekend, which disappointed analysts.

"Interstellar" has now hit most major markets in the world, earning $15.8 million in Korea, $6 million in the United Kingdom and $5.3 million in Russia. The film is set to debut in Japan next week, which will add more to its overall international revenue.
