Katherine Heigl will star in an upcoming spy drama series on NBC entitled "State of Affairs."

The former "Grey's Anatomy" star will play the role of a top CIA analyst and will be romantically involved with the President of the United States, played by actor Alfre Woodard, according to Fresnobee.

In a recent interview, Heigl explained that she decided to return back to television because she wanted to portray the role of a CIA analyst, the same publication noted.

"What was so compelling to me is that this is an actual job, and I had never realized that, I'm not sure why, but a lot of people have asked me, 'Does this really happen? Does the President have a briefer?' And I thought the opportunity to delve into that and show this side of the CIA was really compelling," she said.

Heigl also talked about how she was guided and briefed by one of the show's executive producers, Rodney Faraon, who also happens to be a briefer during the Bush and Clinton administrations.

"He has all these really awesome stories that make you feel like maybe somebody is going to come knock down your door and drag you off somewhere for knowing. But he promised me that wouldn't happen," she explained.

Faraon meanwhile added that although "State of Affairs" is a work of fiction, they still try their best to make it as authentic and as relatable as possible, Philly reported.

"You'd use that two hours to get all the information you possibly can. One of the worst things you can do as a professional CIA analyst with the awesome responsibility of briefing the President of the United States is to go in there half cocked with just three words to say that this is what happened," Faraon dished.

"State of Affairs" will premiere on Monday at 10 p.m, the Toronto Sun noted.
