"The Mortal Instruments" will return as a TV series!
After "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" flopped at the box office, Constantin Film, the German production company that controls the rights to Cassandra Clare's best-selling young-adult fantasy novel series and which produced the movie, is bringing the franchise to the small screen.
Constantin executive board chairman Martin Moszkowicz confirmed the news at a launch for the company's high-end TV series, "Shades of Guilt," at Mipcom TV market in Cannes, France Sunday, Oct. 11, according to Variety.
Though 50 percent of the production company's activities are already in TV, Moszkowicz said that the firm's strategic goal was to move more toward the television. "We are increasing our TV activities substantially both in Germany and internationally," he said, noting that fiction series would be the center of their growth.
"Constantin has a lot of feature film brands and we are moving them into television. For instance, we own the rights to the book series 'The Mortal Instruments,' and we just hired a showrunner in Los Angeles, and our offices in Los Angeles and Canada are starting production next year on at least two or three international shows," Moszkowicz revealed.
"It actually makes sense to do (the novels) as a TV series," Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter of the "The Mortal Instruments." "There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the 'Mortal Instruments' film. In the series we'll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth."
Ed Decter, whose writer-producer credits include "Helix," "Unforgettable," "In Plain Sight" and "The Client List" has been attached to serve as the showrunner for "The Mortal Instruments" television adaptation.
No broadcast partners are currently attached to the series, and there is no word yet as to whether the film's cast members will reprise their roles.
Lily Collins, who played the main character Clary Fray in the movie, is currently busy doing other projects, so it is uncertain if she will come back to the franchise, Moviepilot reported. The 25-year-old actress just finished filming the upcoming romantic movie "Love, Rosie" and a yet-to-titled drama flick written and directed by Warren Beatty. She is also set to star in another rom-com flick "How to Be Single."
Jamie Campbell-Bower, the bad boy Jace Wayland in "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," is not new to television. He played King Arthur in the 2011 mini-series "Camelot," so there's a great possibility that he will return for the TV series, Moviepilot reported.
"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" has a production budget of $60 million, and it only grossed $31.1 million in the US and $59.4 million in international markets, according to Box Office Mojo.
