Universal has ordered a third "The Purge" film from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, Deadline first reported.

James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed "The Purge" and "The Purge: Anarchy," will pen the third installment with an eye toward directing.

"I never imagined that 'The Purge' would become the phenomenon it has become," DeMonaco told Deadline. "And I am thrilled to continue my collaboration with Blumhouse, Sebastien Lemercier, Platinum Dunes and the great team at Universal in building 'The Purge' into a worldwide franchise."

Lemercier, Blumhouse Productions' Jason Blum, and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are all returning to produce.

The third installment of the franchise is part of Blum's 10-year first-look deal with Universal, which was announced during the opening weekend of "The Purge: Anarchy" in July, according to Variety.

The development of a third installment is not a surprise since the first two films - set in a world where all criminal acts are legal for 12 hours - were huge hits at the box office.

"The Purge," which starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, grossed $64.5 million in the US and $24.9 million in international markets, according to Box Office Mojo. The flick, which was released in June 2013, only had a production cost of $3 million.

Its sequel, "The Purge: Anarchy," had a much bigger production budget of $9 million, and it earned $71.6 million domestically and $37.2 million overseas, according to Box Office Mojo. The film, which opened last July, starred Frank Grillo and Zach Gilford.

The first installment of the franchise is a home invasion movie, since it only focused on a single family and the events surrounding their night. The sequel, on the other hand, followed the stories of several groups of people.

While it is still uncertain whether the third film will center on a single group or multiple characters, some entertainment and media news websites are now giving speculations on what could be the focus of the upcoming film.

"One interesting idea for the sequel would be to follow someone who breaks the two rules of The Purge and uses unauthorized Class 5 weapons, whatever those may be, to hunt down a government official with a ranking of 10 or higher," wrote Jeff Sneider of TheWrap.

Alternatively, the third installment could also follow a group of anti-Purgers, or could simply focus on how the government uses The Purge, according to Screenrant.
