Earlier this week, several news sites reported that George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin would perform their civil marriage ceremony at Chelsea Old Town Hall, Friday, Sept. 12, ahead of their extravagant Italian wedding later this month. Several people gathered outside the London town hall Friday, hoping to see the celebrity couple, however, they ended up cheering another pair of newlyweds.
Celebrity and entertainment magazine Us Weekly was the most often quoted source for a report that the 53-year-old "Ocean's Eleven" star would wed the 36-year-old Lebanese-born London-based human rights lawyer "with their parents present" at the said town hall, according to Reuters. Apparently, the said report was nothing but rumor.
The Chelsea Register Office announced in a terse notice (shown below) pinned to its door that they are not conducting Clooney and Alamuddin's wedding on the said date and that they cannot reveal any details about their upcoming nuptials. But that did not stop onlookers, mostly women, and photographers turning up outside the town hall on the off chance.
"We have assisted in the legal preliminaries for a proposed wedding for George Clooney and his fiancée. We do not give out details of the date or time of any wedding ceremony. A certificate of no impediment was applied for and has been issued as no objection was raised," read the beginning of the notice.
"We are NOT conducting the wedding of Mr. Clooney at this office today (Friday 12th September) and a film crew and press photographers would only cause plausible disruption to other couples getting married on this day," the Chelsea Register Office said in the notice.
Nine couples married during the day. Many of them opted to leave through the back entrance of the building to avoid media attention, according to Reuters.
But newlyweds Rebecca and Martin English walked straight into a cheering crowd of 200 people, who thought that they were Clooney and Alamuddin, People reported.
"We didn't have any idea about this," Mrs. English told People. "When I came in this morning, I just saw this mass of people and started thinking, 'What on earth is that?' Now I know how it feels to be famous!"
Meanwhile, Clooney declared his love for Alamuddin, while speaking at the Celebrity Fight Night in Florence, Italy, last Sunday, Sept. 7, according to Us Weekly.
"I want to thank all of you," Clooney said while accepting the Andrea Bocelli Humanitarian Award on stage at the Palazzo Vecchio. "Because, for the last dozen years or so, you've made me an honorary citizen. I have enjoyed every single moment of it."
The Oscar-winning actor then wrapped up his speech by declaring his love for his bride-to-be. "In closing I would just like to say to my bride-to-be, Amal, that I love you very much. And I can't wait to be your husband," he said.
