The annual Electric Zoo music festival, held in New York, was ended prematurely for the second consecutive year, this time due to threats of harsh weather.

The three-day electronic music festivities were shut down on its last day, Sunday, following warnings of "extreme weather conditions". Last year, the event was shut down on its final day because of two drug-related deaths.

Organizers of the five-year-old festival -- which has featured top electronic dance music acts from around the world and was scheduled to feature on Sunday headline performances by Kaskade, Alesso, Skrillex and David Guetta, among other famous performers -- decided to pull the plug a few hours before the show was set to start.

They immediately announced to festival-goers that it was "shutting down for the remainder of the festival." "We apologize to fans, but your safety is our main concern," they later said on Twitter.

The people behind Electric Zoo coordinated with officials before the announcement, with the National Weather Service advising of flash floods following heavy downpours and lightning. By 4:30, organizers ordered Randall's Island, where the festival was held, evacuated.

Attendees left the venue by ferry or bus, and the evacuation was described by organizers as orderly. There were no reports of injuries during the festival or the evacuation, according to the fire department.

As fans made their way out of the venue, they took to Twitter to voice out frustration, some noting that it was the second year that the festival's last night was cancelled. Some scheduled performers also expressed their feelings about the cancellation.

"I can't believe this!! I was so looking forward" to playing Sunday night, said the Swedish DJ Alesso on Twitter.

Last year, Electric Zoo's final night was axed after the deaths of two concert-goers who overdosed on MDMA, otherwise known as molly or ecstasy.

There were no reports of arrests during this year's festivities.
