Joan Rivers' family is reportedly considering filing a lawsuit over the alleged mishandled procedure that caused the "Fashion Police" host's collapse, according to New York Daily News.
"Shock and upset is turning to anger, and they are looking for someone to blame," a source close to the family told the newspaper, suggesting that Rivers' camp might file a lawsuit against Yorkville Endoscopy, where the 81-year-old actress-comedian had a routine throat procedure Thursday, Aug. 28.
"The night before, she was performing and now she is on life support," the source continued. "An 81-year-old should not have that procedure as an outpatient. Very ill advised."
Doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital already started bringing Rivers out from her medically induced coma Sunday, Aug. 31, as her only child, Melissa Rivers, monitored how her mom will respond.
"The waking-up process has begun and will take until Tuesday," another source close to the family told New York Daily News. "There is real concern that the part of the brain that controls motor skills may have been compromised, leaving her as either a vegetable or in a wheelchair."
While undergoing the throat surgery at the private Upper East Side clinic, Rivers stopped breathing, and someone at the clinic called 911, TMZ reported.
Police who responded to the 911 call told People they transported the veteran comedian they described as an "81-year-old female" from "a doctor's office on 93rd Street to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition."
Doctors then put Rivers in a coma to stabilize her vital signs. She was breathing with the help of a machine since Sunday, New York Daily News noted.
After learning the incident, Melissa, 46, and her 13-year-old son Cooper immediately took a flight to New York City to be with the host, according to E! News.
"I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother," Melissa said in a statement Sunday. "She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."
