This week we honor classic beauty, Tippi Hedren.

Etched into cinematic history, Hedren was the elegant blonde starlet that was cast on the legendary thriller The Birds. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the film was Hedren's silver screen debut, and would later cause a storm of controversy as well.

A Minnesota native, Hedren was discovered by the famed director Hitchcock after seeing her in a soft drink commercial on TV. The two met and an infamously famous relationship was sealed with initial signs of box office success.

Despite it being her first movie role, Hedren was not the first blonde beauty to grace the spotlight of Hitchcock's camera. The director has worked previously with iconic beauty turned royal, Grace Kelly and in Hedren, believed he had found his replacement.

It is said that in Hedren, Hitchcock refueled his personal love for blondes. On set, Hitchcock dictated all of his leading lady's hairstyles, makeup details, and custom designed wardrobe. Hitchcock was once recorded in an interview as explaining why he preferred his actresses fit this prototype.

"You know why I favor sophisticated blondes in my films? What intrigues you is the paradox between the inner fire and the cool surface," he explained. "

But with so much attention and adoration, Hedren began to feel the negative effects of being the center of her director's attention. "He was too possessive and too demanding," the actress recalled. "I cannot be possessed by anyone."

Controversy and sordid behind-the-scenes issues aside, Hedren nailed the part of the elegant, refined socialite. Her look is impeccably flawless, with a timeless style that is still very much modern-day chic.

Hitchcock demanded flawless skin, soft lips, defined brows, and subtle eyeshadow, and Hedren embodied the look of her character -- a classically sophisticated beauty.
