How "The Ordinary" Changed Skincare Trends

Drugstore skincare brands like The Ordinary are making a wave in the industry, all thanks to the viral TikTok videos.

Teens and young adults are veering away from some cult-favorite brands and exploring brands that offer low-cost skincare.

Launched in 2016 by DECIEM, at the time, The Ordinary product features twenty-seven products, showcasing its "cutting-edge science with modest price points." Through the years, it caters to an evolving collection of skincare treatments that embodies "effective clinical technologies."

According to Forbes, retail analyst Heather Ibberson of Edited explained that modern beauty brand's main driver is giving its consumers affordable products.

"Combined with effective and high-quality ingredients, drugstore skincare has become increasingly popular in the past year," she furthered.

In addition, Ibberson also highlighted the effects of social media and the global pandemic, giving people more time to discover new products out in the market.

Chief executive officer and co-founder of The Ordinary's parent company Deciem, Nicola Kilner, admitted that there was an increase in their sales, mainly the Vitamin C product.

Following this, social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube contributed to the rise of drugstore skincare in hopes of achieving clear and younger-looking skin without hurting your budget.

The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres

For $7, this contains a potent vitamin C that is a useful source of antioxidants, reducing signs of aging while brightening the skin tone.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

The list for the top skincare trend will not complete without hyaluronic acid 2% + B5. A popular and well-loved ingredient in beauty products, this helps retain moisture levels without that icky feeling.

Aside from hydration, it also improves the appearance of the skin, leaving it plumped and moisturized.

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

Another cult favorite and most hyped on TikTok is the peeling solution from The Ordinary.

Don't be intimidated by its blood looking consistency; this product is definitely life-changing as it features a mix of AHAs and BHAs that deeply exfoliates, removing any build-up, dead skin, and hyperpigmentation on the skin.

However, most beauty experts advise the consumer to use this product only once a week as it contains a very high concentration of free acids.

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2%

Last but definitely not least is the lactic acid with 10% + HA 2%. A form of chemical exfoliation, it contains an alpha hydroxy acid that helps remove dead skin cells by mildly exfoliating the skin.
