Modern Shag is 2021’s Biggest Hair Trend

Popularized in the 70s by iconic musicians such as Joan Jett, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and award-winning actress Jane Fonda, the low maintenance look, known as the shag haircut, was definitely a trend back then.

In the 90s and early 2000s, this trend came back with a different approach. At the time, "Friends" actress Jennifer Aniston was the talk of the town with her signature "The Rachel" hairstyle.

Aside from the brunette beauty, Meg Ryan was also sporting a different version of the shag. The "Sleepless in Seattle" star features a medium textured blonde hairdo that showcased the natural volume that emphasized her inherently wavy to curly hair.

A decade later, the hair trend clings to the more experimental side. Just like skincare and makeup, hairstyle inspirations become innovative and creative through the years-- from vibrant colors, blunt bob to sleek and polished style.

Hair Trends 2021: The Modern Shag

Interestingly some trends seem to never go out of style. A decade later, modern shag haircuts came with a loud bang this 2021. This year, it is all about texture and embracing our natural hair.

According to WhoWhatWear.com, Revlon Professional global artistic ambassador Mark Leeson, he explained that the modern shag "is the ultimate undone statement haircut," adding "It's choppy and full of texture and makes for a refreshing change to long, one-length hair. On a daily basis, you don't need to do much to a well-cut shag style, as the texture and shape are already cut into it."

What's good about this hair trend is that it is versatile and caters to all hair types. Whether you have straight, thick, fine to curly--you can totally rock this low-maintenance hairstyle.

Wispy and Feathery Texture for Curly Hair

Leeson also shared that regardless of length, "feathered texture" is excellent for curly and Afro hair. For that modern look, his advice is to "combine voluminous curls with a short, face-framing, ringlet fringe" to give a textured and carefree vibe.

Go for a softer cut but make sure that your stylist doesn't cut in too many layers because this could make the overall look outdated and very retro.

The Edgy, Short Shag Hairstyle

For those who want to have a cool-girl look, opt for a short shag haircut that can be suited to most face shapes, depending on the length of the bob.

The tousled top with mid-layers provides enough volume and texture to the hair, plus it also gives the face the illusion of a slimmer appearance.

A lovely shaggy lob with textured and carefree waves is perfect for that ethereal and dreamy vibe.

As seen on model and actress Suki Waterhouse, she chose to have soft, face-framing layers and mid-length cut, showcasing her voluminous, natural waves.

Playing with Colors

Now that you have the modern shag, you can opt for a nice hair color suited for your skin tone.

For low-maintenance, one can choose a balayage color that features a graduated, more natural-looking highlight effect.
