Medical tourism is on the rise in New York City. It seems that more people are traveling to the Big Apple and skipping the discount, shady operations route when it comes to plastic surgery, but could that reason have something to do with celebrities?

Doctor Andrew Jacono, M.D., F.A.C.S., director of the New York Center for Facial Plastic and Laser Surgery, has noticed a recent upswing in patients from around the world coming to NYC for surgery. The cause of that phenomenon is fueled by "superior quality of care, " but really the "global popularity and seemingly flawless features of our homegrown celebrities."

"As other cultures are catching up to the U.S. in their acceptance of plastic surgery, there has been a dramatic increase in patients traveling from overseas for higher quality cosmetic procedures," said Jacono, according to PR Newswire. "In the past month alone, I've seen patients from Romania, Turkey, Singapore, France, Italy and Russia in my practice."

It seems that rhinoplasty, face and eyelid lifts are the most popular requests from this international visitors. Just like many celebrities, who covet these cosmetic procedures, many people are looking to achieve a more youthful appearance.

There's a recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons that discusses the trend of Americans traveling to developing nations for less costly procedures. But Dr. Jacono warns of the medical and legal problems that may be result from these surgeries performed on a budget.

Jacono's advice? For those considering cosmetic surgery, they should get quality treatments that will keep them as safe as possible like those chosen by many Hollywood A-listers.

"Unfortunately, revision plastic surgeries - making adjustments to poorly performed rhinoplasty and other procedures - are very common in my practice," added Jacono. "That's why it's so important to evaluate the surgeon based on the quality of care, level of experience and proven results, rather than cost. "

The U.S is known to charge a higher cost for cosmetic procedures, compared to places like Thailand or Mexico. Although the price is high, NYC has become a mecca for those wanting to have work done on their bodies.

In recent weeks, Renee Zellweger was surrounded by rumors that she had sought plastic surgery to make her face slimmer.
