Treating toenail fungal infection can be hard, but it is necessary to avoid further complications. If regular topical medications won't work, or you simply want to use a natural home remedy, coconut oil is a good alternative.

Toenail fungal infections cause the nails to become thick, brittle, and discolored. Yeast, molds, and fungal organisms such as dermatophyte are known to cause toenail infections. These types of fungi penetrate the nails through the small cracks or skin around the nails.

Apart from age, reduced blood circulation and a weak immune system also make one susceptible to fungal infection. While it is common in older people, anyone can develop it at any age. Left untreated, it can lead to permanent damage to the nails, which can be very painful.

Coconut oil is one of the most effective home toenail fungal infection remedies thanks to its anti-fungal properties. In particular, it contains lauric acid that is effective in eliminating bacteria and fungi.

How to apply coconut oil on your infected toenails

First, you need to clean your hands and feet. Once you dry them with a towel, you can then apply the coconut oil. Ensure that you reach even the underneath of your nails. After that, leave the oil on for about 10 to 15 minutes. You may repeat it twice or three times daily.

You can also use warm coconut oil. Soak a bowl of coconut oil in warm water. Once the coconut oil is warm enough, you may apply it to the affected area. Do this three to six times a day until the infection subsides.

Alternatively, you can add cinnamon oil. Cinnamon oil helps improve blood circulation. Simply add a few drops of cinnamon to two tablespoons of coconut oil. Then apply the mixture to your infected toenails. Leave that mixture on until it dries. Do this process daily until the infection goes away.

Another option is to use coconut oil bandage. First, warm the coconut oil until it liquefies. You may then soak that bandage with the melted oil. Then, apply the bandage on the affected area and allow it to dry. It is best to do it before bedtime. Just make sure that you cover it with a plastic bag or socks. Remember to replace the bandage daily.

What is the right coconut oil for treating toenail fungal infection?

For the best possible results, choose unrefined, cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil to treat your toenails. Virgin coconut oil is derived using expeller-pressing, and often using the cold-pressed method. A cold-pressed process means that the oil is derived without using heat, so it retains its antioxidant properties.
