Demi Lovato has been experiencing plenty of success lately however, the "Neon Lights" artist's time in the spotlight did not happen without plenty of dark times.
According to E! News, during a chat with the new issue of Cosmopolitan for Latinas which she promoted on Twitter, the starlet opened up about maintaining a sober lifestyle after struggling with substance abuse along with bipolar disorder and cutting.
The starlet reflected on her 21st birthday trip to Africa last summer. Lovato revealed, "I was used to drinking and doing drugs on my birthday.

Lovato admitted that managing her bipolar disorder is "a daily thing."
She explained, "I treat it with medication," adding, "Not everybody does that, but for me it works.
"That's what works for me-medicating, checking in with people, being honest and being grateful for things."
The "Let It Go" singer confessed that she hopes she can be a strong role model for young girls and fans.
"When I was younger, I needed someone in the spotlight to idolize, who stood for positivity and light and happiness, and wanted to change the world."
Demi Lovato continued, "And because I didn't have that, I realized, I want to do that, if only for my 12-year-old little sister."
Looking to the future, Wilmer Valderrama's girlfriend admitted she has high hopes. She explained, "I'm very proud of how far I've come, but I definitely want to win a Grammy one day, and I dream of winning an Oscar.
