Premature hair loss is so depressing for men in their teens and early 20s and can literally rob them of their confidence just when they're making their way in the world and need it most. What a bummer! What these young men don't realize, however, is that there really is a whole host of effective options available now that weren't there in years past, as explained by Trichologist Mark Blake to Beauty4Media.

For men looking to treat premature hair loss, the first step is setting up a consultation with an expert, which involves a differential diagnosis to correctly assess the patient's problem. This is an important step in the process, as there are around 50 different causes of hair loss! A few options for young men like Prince William might include:

Minoxidil. "This is a topical lotion that slows down and can stop hair loss," Blake said. "Available at most chemists at a 2% concentration for women and 5% for men, I'm currently seeing excellent results on patients using this super high strength lotion. Patients simply have to apply the fornula once a day before bed. Mark is a huge fan of this hair loss option. "In my view most 20-year old males should be using Minoxidil - why wait till you've lost it? Prevention is better!"

Transplant Surgery. Blake says this option is popular among male celebs. "Everyone's at it. Daniel Craig, Wayne Rooney, Jude Law, James Nesbitt." Mark says the key here is customizing the transplant to you. "Hair transplant surgeons are also artists who can create your new hairstyle from scratch, so it's really important to choose the right one as this hair will be with you for life. But the results are astoundingly good. I work closely with a whole host of transplant specialists and can refer the right surgeon for the job, be it clients with Afro-Caribbean, Caucasian, curly hair, women or even just the latest trend hairlines."

Propecia / Finasteride Tablets. This is said to be a celebrity favorite. "Take 1 a day and hopefully keep the shinny head away, said Blake. "These tablets lock the formation of DHT in your scalp - lowering DHT appears to inhibit the further shrinking of hair follicles in male pattern hair loss."

Laser Caps / Laser Combs (Low level laser therapy). Low level laser light can promote hair growth by micro-circulation, metabolism, protein synthesis at cellular level, and by increasing blood flow to the scalp and follicle Mark explained.

Cosmetic Tattooing. This option involves an expert individual applying a hair permanent cosmetic makeup technique, used to disguse bald areas to offer the look of natural hair. "This ia a good solution for men with very short hair," Blake noted.

Caffeine Shampoos. Found in supermarkets, these feel like they are working by stimulating your arrector pili muscle to contract - the same effect as when you are frightened (hair stands on end, i.e. goose bumps). "Sadly the contact time of a shampoo in the shower and the dilution of the shampoo has little other affect on you follicles," Mark said.

"I believe that if Prince William came to see me now, I could offer him alternatives to boost hair growth and even reverse his hair loss - I wish he'd give me a call, but it looks like he's going for the same look as his Uncle Edward...unfortunately," said Blake. To each his hairy own!
