At #1: Chanel No. 5 Perfume

So all of our list makers on this countdown have staying power, but this classic perfume is the definition of timeless. We're talking 90 years of non-stop sales, gotta have it reviews, and a legacy that has taken this perfume to iconic status.

Chanel No. 5 is beloved by women around the globe. It is estimated that a bottle of this tantalizing juice is sold every 30 seconds. The fragrance is a rich blend of 80 ingredients, including jasmine, rose, sandalwood and vanilla. Launched in 1921, Chanel No. 5 was an instant success. Aside from Coco Chanel's brilliant marketing strategies, the perfume itself was a winner for its original scent and for its ability to revolutionize the world of fragrance.

Named for its creator, this perfume is the scent-sational brain-child of socialite and legendary fashion house trailblazer, the one and only, Coco Chanel.

Coco craved a fresh clean perfume that lasted on the skin. Unlike the popular notes of the day like citrus and bergamot which faded quickly, Chanel and perfumer Earnest Beaux, envisioned a scent that could stand the test of freshness as well as time. In just under a year, Beaux presented Chanel with several different fragrance options. They were numbered 1 to 5, and 20 to 24. And of course we know which option Coco chose.

Rumored to be a formula mistake, Chanel No. 5 was the chosen scent. It is said the fragrance accidentally came about after Beaux's assistant added an extra dose of aldehyde to the concoction while in the lab. Mistake or not, Coco loved it. It was like nothing on the market and nothing anyone had smelled before.

The legendary Chanel was later quoted as saying "It was what I was waiting for. A perfume like nothing else. A woman's perfume, with the scent of a woman."

Chanel No. 5 was further sealed into icon status after the equally iconic Hollywood legend, Marilyn Monroe, mentioned the fragrance during a 1954 interview. When asked what she wore to bed, Marilyn Monroe famously said, "Five drops of Chanel No. 5."

As the most popular perfume of all time, Chanel No. 5 has had tons of celebrity fans. With Ms. Monroe giving her own personal endorsement of the scent, its no wonder the rest of Tinseltown followed. Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt are just a few of the current stars who have fallen for this fragrance and promoted its greatness.

With its brand almost a century old, this perfume stands the ultimate test of time and remains a favorite of beauty junkies everywhere. Check out the amazing video below that proves why Chanel No. 5 is still Number 1!
