According to Entertainment Wise, Dobrev spoke about the on-screen romance and said, "It's been a fun summer for Elena and Damon. Elena's going to college now, so they're going to try to make the long distance thing work."

The celebrity gossip site also reported that the executive producer said, "There's no drama in happiness. One of the things [we will try] to do is to try to keep them happy for a while in the midst of the bad things around them that are trying to tear them apart."

Somerhalder revealed that he was actually surprised that Damon won Elena's heart over Stephen (played by Paul Wesley) he said, "I thought they were joking. Damon never gets the girl."

However, Wesley jokingly responded, "Don't downplay the sexy blue eyes. Don't downplay the Smolderholder."

Somerhalder later added, "It is Mystic Falls and essentially you can't be that happy for that long, so there's always got to be that drama," when he was asked about his character's future.

"It's the honeymoon phase," Nina added.

The two seemed to get a long on the panel but it was reported earlier this week that the former couple had a few awkward moments when not in front of a camera.

It was alleged that while making her way into the press room Dobrev went out of her way to avoid her ex-boyfriend.

"Ian showed up and Nina showed up shortly after. She saw Ian was right in front of her and went away, then came back a little later so they were spaced out a bit more during press-line interviews."

However, they seemed quite comfortable with one another during their chat with Entertainment Weekly, when Somerhalder leaned in close to Dobrev and the actress held his arm a few times when he reached over her to show off his phone case.
