After more than 30 days of 50-plus witnesses, controversy and 16-plus hours of jury deliberations, a six-women jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of manslaughter and second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, according to the Daily Beast.
The neighborhood watch organizer, 29, claimed that he shot and killed the 17-year-old unarmed African-American teenager in self defense in Sanford, Fl. on Feb. 26, 2012. On Saturday night, he was acquitted of all charges, to the shock, tears and disappointment of many people across the nation, including celebrities.
One of the most dramatic, contentious and publicly engrossing cases in recent history drew a verdict that left the slain teen's family emotionally shattered. "Even though I am broken hearted my faith is unshattered I WILL ALWAYS LOVE MY BABY TRAY," Martin's father, Tracy tweeted after the verdict was announced.
And the family has staunch supporters still pushing for justice everywhere. President Barack Obama referred to Martin's death as an "American tragedy" in a national statement responding to the verdict, reported New York magazine.
"I now ask every American to respect the call of calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son," the President wrote. "And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities....We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that's the job for all of us. That's the way to honor Trayvon Martin."
Singer Rihanna tweeted her disappointment over the end of such a life-changing trial. "This is the saddest news ever!!! #whatjustice #pray4theMartinFamily" and "Only in America #Trayvon Martin." She also posted, "'A system cannot fail those it was never built to protect' #JudicialFail." The "Stay" songbird also went on Instagram to voice her frustation and emotions alongside Martin's picture. "A child was gunned down for no reason! And nothing about that sounds like murder? My baby brother is 17 and this rocked my whole s**t! #thesystemisandalwayshasbeenphucked."
Miley Cyrus took to Twitter to write, "I feel sick #RipTrayvonMartin" and "no justice, no peace."
"One Tree Hill" actress Sophia Bush tweeted, "The wind is more than knocked out of me...My heart aches for this boy's family. Justice System? I don't think so. #justicefortrayvon."
Nicki Minaj tweeted, "And our taxes paid for that trial. We just paid to see a murderer walk free after killing an innocent unarmed little boy #GodBlessAmerica."
Beyonce stopped her Nashville concert for a moment of silence for Martin after the verdict announcment, according to TMZ.
As of the latest, the U.S. Justice Department is looking into Martin's death to determine whether federal proscutors should file criminal rights charges, according to the Huffington Post.
ABC News reported that the NAACP urged the Justice Department to take action.
The NAACP posted a petition garnering more than 275,000 signatures overnight after having been posted on Saturday night, reported BuzzFeed. "The most fundamental right - the right to life - was violated the night George Zimmerman stalked and then took the life of Travyon Martin," the petition read. "We ask that the Justice Department file civil rights charges against Mr. Zimmerman for this egregious violation."
