Since their break up Taylor Swift and John Mayer have not been big fans of each other's music, especially since the country star humiliated the singer by calling him out in her song "Dear John."
However, this time around it looks like Mayer decided to give Swift a taste of her own medicine by discreetly bashing her in his song "Paper Doll."
According to E! News, the singer appeared on the "Today" show on Friday to promote his new album "Paradise Valley" and was asked by anchor Willie Geist if his new single was about Taylor Swift.
While speaking with the singer Geist asked the much anticipated question about the song without directly naming Swift, he said, "There's been some speculation from the press that it might be about someone, true or false?"
The singer played coy and responded by saying, "Songwriters write songs because of people, about people. Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don't get involved in it. It's none of my business."
The song seems to make several references to Swift's song "22," for example the chorus of Mayer's songs is, "You're like 22 girls in one / And none of them know what they're running from / Was it just too far to fall / for a little paper doll."
In another verse the singer makes reference to Swift's song where she said, "Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone / Don't think I was too young to be messed with? / The girl in the dress cried the whole way home."
In "Paper Dolls" he responds by saying, "Dress of gold and blue /Sure was fun being good to you."
E! News reported that the stars dated from late 2009 to early 2010. In an interview with Rolling Stones following the break up, Mayer slammed his ex's song about him calling it "cheap songwriting."
"I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?"
Mayer also mentioned that he didn't deserve that and it was a "really lousy thing" for the songstress to do.
Although he was asked whether "Paper Doll" was specifically about someone, the blues rocker did not really answer the question which leaves us still wondering if the song is truly about Taylor Swift.
