Barbie is no longer the super-skinny, ultra-toned doll we once knew after an U.S. artist gave her some recent "plastic surgery."
Artist Nickolay Lamm, 24, gave a realistic makeover to the famed doll using an "average 19-year-old" American woman's body's measurements as per Centers of Disease Control research on MyDeals.com , according to Yahoo! UK & Ireland Lifestyle. Over the years, the Mattel toy had faced much criticism from women and feminist groups over its unrealistic body proportions. But a newer, healthier-looking doll should produce a positive response and more honest dialogue.
Lamm has already spoken his piece. "Some people say that we shouldn't pay attention to the body proportions of Barbie because she is just a toy," he wrote in his post on MyDeals on Monday. "On the surface, that sounds like a valid argument. But a closer look, through research, suggests that Barbie may lead to the following...Heightened body dissatisfaction among young girls, unhealthy eating behaviors, a desire to achieve a slim body and therefore eat less."
Only an illustration could demonstrate his point so after making a 3-D realistic model, he dressed it up like a Barbie using Photoshop and then photographed it next to a standard Barbie to show the striking differences, according to Today.com. Lamm wrote that the end result of his project is what "Barbie would look like if she were a healthy, beautiful 19-year-old woman." In being a 3-D model with human size dimensions, Barbie is now "normal." And possibly, more marketable and relatable than the beloved original.
"I created normal Barbie because I wanted to show that average is beautiful," Lamm stated in an email to Today.com. "If average-looking Barbie looks this good and if there's even a chance of Barbie negativity influencing young girls, why not make one?" He noted that there can be "different interpretations" of what is considered an "average" body type, but that using the CDC measurements makes his creation "pretty close."
Lamm would not mind if this becomes an overnight sensation and a real product in stores. "If normal Barbie can be made, I feel she'll have a more positive influence on girls than Barbie in its current form," he said. "Normal Barbie shows that you are beautiful, just the way you are."
