On Saturday, a female performer of Cirque du Soleil lost her life in a tragic accident onstage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
According to Variety, veteran aerialist, Sarah "Sassoon" Guyard-Guillot, 31, did not slip out of a safety harness before falling some 50 feet during the climax of their "Ka" performance. It was the first onstage fatality for the legendary acrobatic troupe.
Right now, the details are slim on what lead to her fatal fall.
"At this point in time, I can't confirm exactly what happened," said Cirque spokesperson, Renee-Claude Menard. "But I can confirm that she did not slip out of the harness."
The Clark County's Coroner's Office is working with OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, to investigate the tragedy.
"There is certainly a safety apparatus that is used during any Cirque du Soleil show, " said John Fudenberg of the coroner's office, "and I know that company is very safety-conscious. We have to make sure we inspect the safety harnesses and we'll work with OSHA to do some of that."
Some reports speculate that the safety line that held her could be a possible reason for the tragedy.
"Our priority is to find out how this happened," Fudenberg continued. "We have to know exactly what failed so we and OSHA can make recommendations on what should be done and how to prevent this from happening again."
Guyard-Guillot was being "hoisted up the side of the stage when she plummeted to an open pit below," said an audience member, Dan Mosqueda of Colorado Spring, Co. "Initially, a lot of people in the audience thought it was apart of the (show,)" he said. "But you could hear screaming, then groaning, and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage."
The show continued momentarily before coming to a halt and informing audience members that refunds and vouchers would be offered. Then, the crowd was dismissed.
Further shows of "Ka" are indefinitely cancelled.
Guyard-Guillot died in an ambulance and was pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m. The mother of two children was a Paris native, trained as an acrobat and aerialist at Annie Fratellini Art & Circus Academy. She had been performing since the age of 22 with "Ka," and was also head coach for the "Cirque Fit" kids program.
