For her 40th birthday on Saturday, Heidi Klum received handcrafted sculptures from her kids, but she also proved to be a fashion risk taker.

The model appeared to channel "Alice in Wonderland" favorite, the Mad Hatter in sporting stacked top hats that toed the line between fantasy and reality. It was very "childlike" and proved how youthful and fun the blonde beauty is when it comes to fashion, according to the Huffington Post.

Cameras caught her with the the jewel-encrusted and towering headgear at a breakfast with her children and boyfriend, Martin Kristen at the Bel Air Hotel in Los Angeles, Calif. The eccentric choice could have easily graced the heads of one of her children with its storybook-like appeal.

She paired the dramatic, decorative trio of hats full of plenty of rich embellishments with a beaded charcoal jacket on top of a v-neck white tee, skintight black jeans and open toe high heels. Her blonde hair was bone-straight, allowing the hats to fit and stay in place as she strutted in the street.

The look read flamboyant and playful while bordering a bit on kooky.

According to E! Online, Klum was celebrating her birthday with the theatrical look at a swanky luncheon with friends including Fergie.
