The ex-boyfriend of Amanda Knox gave an exclusive interview with "Today's" Savannah Guthrie and revealed why he never abandoned his former girlfriend and why he is not afraid to go back to jail.

Back in 2007 after dating Amanda Knox both she and then boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were soon arrested and under investigation following the murder of British university student Meredith Kercher.

When the murder investigation erupted Sollecito only knew Knox for seven days and spent 4 years in prison because he was confident in their innocence.

Guthrie inquired about Sollecito's loyalty to Knox, "What strikes me about your story is that you knew Amanda Knox just seven days when all of this happened.

"And there was enormous pressure on you to implicate her, to point the finger at her, and you didn't."

Raffaele Sollecito responded to the host and said, "I had to be very serious and not playing a game with some people who wanted this game to be played."

Sollecito told Guthrie he knew Knox was innocent. Even when his parents pleaded with him to cooperate with authorities and implicate her in the murder he would not do it.

Sollecito explained to Guthrie that, "(Amanda) told me that she thinks that I'm a kind of hero, but I don't feel so.

"And I don't need any kind of gratitude... I did it because I know it's the truth. It's the good thing to do. It's the only way for me."

Following their release both Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito have remained "good friends" and have recently been discussing how they will proceed with the case when they return to Italy.

Guthrie asked Sollecito, "Do you have faith in the Italian justice system?"

He said, ""I have faith in God."

"The Italian justice system, is something like, you don't know what to expect."
