On Monday McDonald's announced that it will be adding 3 new quarter pounders to the menu. The fast food chain is looking to offer cheaper premium burgers while capitalizing on one of its most popular brands.
As McDonald's consumers say goodbye to the Angus Third Pounder, which was one of the most expensive sandwiches on the menu averaging $4 to$5 they can soon try the new Angus variety burgers, expected to roll out nationally in June according to the Examiner.
Greg Watson, SVP of McDonald's USA's Menu Innovation Team spoke with Burgerbusiness.com about the new burgers on Monday.
"We're going to take most popular builds from the Angus line--the Deluxe [American cheese, tomato, fresh leaf lettuce, red onion, crinkle-cut pickles, mayo and mustard] and the Bacon & Cheese [American cheese, bacon, red onion, crinkle-cut pickles, ketchup and mustard]--and put them on the Quarter Pounder brand."
"We'll create a third, new flavor--Habanero Ranch [with white Cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and habanero ranch sauce when tested]--that will round out the entire Quarter Pounder line. The three new flavors will be served on bakery-style buns."
The 3 new additions to McDonald's will remain permanent items on the menu. Consumers should expect the Quarter Pounders ads to surface in McDonald's in mid June.
According to CBS News, "McDonald's is hoping such new items and ingredients can give slumping sales a boost."
"Late last year, the company said a monthly sales figure fell for the first time in nearly decade. Sales at restaurants open at least 13 months were also down for the first three months of this year."
