Former Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson will be releasing an upcoming book called "Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success." A portion of the book will describe Jackson's recently revealed shocking battle with cancer and the impact it had on the basketball team.
Jackson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March 2011, but he did not tell his team until two months later. The Lakers were in the midst of the 2011 second-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks when Jackson finally told his team the secret he had been keeping.
Feeling the team needed a push he consulted with team captains Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryan and from there decided to share his news with the Lakers, according to Examiner.com.
Phil Jackson decided to delay his surgery until the team's season was over. The Lakers were soon eliminated from the 2011 Playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks.
According to Yahoo News, when center Pau Gasol found out about Jackson's news, he found it "shocking," Gasol said, "But then you also could understand certain moments of his demeanor, energy and involvement because of what he was going through health-wise."
"It explained certain things. It was a shock. A difficult moment for the team," he said.
Following the Lakers' elimination from the playoffs last season, Jackson, 67, retired as Lakers coach and is said to be feeling good again.
Rumors have recently surfaced that Jackson was interested in returning to work, possibly in a front-office position with an NBA team.
