Prince William is here to save the day. That's the message two stranded hikers in the mountainous north Wales region of Snowdonia found out Tuesday, as the prince flew in via helicopter to save the men, who were reported missing.
The men, who were in their 40s and 50s, were trekking to the area's Glyder range but were forced to make camp there because they did not have the necessary equipment to make it off the mountain before nightfall, according to British media reports. The area is known for freezing temperatures that can be life-threatening when not adequately prepared for.
The two men planned to make a phone call to a friend, but when the call never came in, authorities were alerted and a search party was sent out to find them. The mountain rescue team eventually found them and with the aid of rescue dogs, William and crew brought in the men from the wilderness.
"The helicopter came about 1am to search the mountain which was quite difficult with patches of low cloud," a source told British newspaper The Mirror.
"Flying in the mountains at night with banks of low cloud requires great skill."
William, who is a trained pilot with the RAF Search and Rescue Force, has been putting his skills to use lately. Clarence House announced that he passed his captaincy tests on May 29, 2012 and is allowed to rescue stranded mountaineers or help swimmers across the UK. Over the last six months he's participated in four rescue missions, including saving shipwrecked Russians in the Irish Sea and schoolgirls stranded off the Welsh coast.
It looks like it's safe to say Kate Middleton's husbad is a man of the people.
