Olympic champion skier Lindsey Vonn had to be taken to a hospital by helicopter after injuring her right knee during her Super-G run at the World Championships.

Vonn lost her balance while landing a jump and flipped over, crashing into the snow. The skier lost her right ski before coming to a halt. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) posted on their website that Vonn was immediately attended to by race medical officials and transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

According to ESPN, U.S. ski team medical director Kyle Wilkens said that Vonn tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in her knee and also suffered a lateral tibia plateau fracture, which involves the upper surface of the shin- bone.

This latest injury is just another in a slew of medical problems that Vonn has had to endure. During the 2009 season, Vonn had a bruised arm after crashing on her opening run of the World Cup giant slalom. Then in 2010 the U.S. skier announced that she had severely bruised her shin in training. And now Vonn's injured knee comes a mere few weeks after she dealt with intestinal issues.

The torn ACL and MCL mean that Vonn's 2013 skiing season has come to an end, preventing her from trying to repeat as World Cup Champion. Vonn was the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012 World Champion, and is also just three wins shy of tying the World Cup wins record of 62.

Vonn's knee injury also has to be of particular concern to her Olympic hopes. The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics are only a year away, and an torn ACL generally takes around 9-12 months to heal. The two-time Olympic champ will need a speedy and successful recovery period if she has hopes of adding to her Olympic medal total.
