Reg Presley, the lead singer of the British rock band the Troggs, has passed away at the age of 71 after battling lung cancer.
The announcement of Presley's death in his Hampshire home in England was confirmed by his daughter Karen, according to the Daily Mail. "He passed away peacefully at home and myself, my brother and our mother were with him," Karen was quoted as telling the London-based World Entertainment News Network. "We're absolutely heartbroken."
The news of the frontman's death comes a year after he made the announcement of his retirement, in an open letter to his fans, due to cancer. "I've had to call time on The Troggs and retire," Presley had said. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years.
Presley's band the Troggs, which were formed in 1964, were best known for their singles "Wild Thing," and "With a Girl Like You." "Love is All Around, Presley's most famous composition, was famously covered by Wet Wet Wet in 1994, and was No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for fifteen weeks.
The Troggs were part of the British invasion that was spearheaded by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. However, their style couldn't be more different from those two bands. The Troggs are considered to be highly influential in inspiring a generation of garage rock bands.
Presley was also very interested in crop circles and UFO's. The singer used the royalties he received from Wet Wet Wet's Cover to fund research into crop circles, which he detailed in his October 2002 book, Wild Things They Don't Tell Us.
