Following his anti-Semitic remarks in Paris two years ago, designer John Galliano has been an outcast in the fashion world. But now, Oscar de la Renta is initiating Galliano's re-entry into the fashion world by hosting him in his studio for the next three weeks, de la Renta's fashion house announced in a press statement.
"John and I have known each other for many years and I am a great admirer of his talent. He worked long and hard at his recovery and I am happy to offer him the opportunity to immerse himself in the world of fashion and get used to an environment where it was so creative, " de la Renta said.
The fashion industry shunned designer Galliano two years ago following his public declaration of his love for Adolf Hitler. He was also accused of hurling anti-Semitic insults at a French couple and mocking them about their appearance.
When taken to court, the British designer said he was under stress during the time and admitted to being addicted to pills and alcohol. Following the scandal, he was quickly fired from Christian Dior, where he was creative director.
Now, with de la Renta's help, Galliano might finally get an opportunity to get his career back on track. He also expressed gratitude to de la Renta for his offer to assist the designer in his upcoming Fall 2013 collection.
"I am an alcoholic. I was treated the last two years. Several years before becoming sober, I sank into the madness of the disease. I have said and done things that have hurt people, especially members of the Jewish community. I apologized in private and in public for the pain I have caused and continue to do so. I am willing to make amends to those I have hurt," said Galliano.
"I have no words to express my gratitude to Oscar to invite me to spend time with him in the familiar environment of a design studio. His support and confidence in me is humbling."
