After opening to a warm welcome in Chicago in November, "50 Shades! The Musical" is set to tantalize New York City. Produced by a troop Baby Wants Candy, which is very popular for its comic sense and timing, the musical has been adapted from E. L. James' bestselling erotic trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey."
Audience in Chicago seemed to have really enjoyed the parody and seats in the Apollo Theater were filled to capacity. "This piece was a little collection of modestly amusing sketches and original songs partly celebrating the daring raunch of the original book, and partly lampooning its central characters," according to Chicago Tribune's Chris Jones. "Everyone kept their clothes on, mercifully, but dirty songs abounded," Jones added. And contrary to the Christian Grey who is supposed to be adorable and kind of scary and extremely fit with wash board abs in the book, is seen with a potbelly in the musical.
"50 Shades! The musical" is filled with dances as well as original songs that are bound to keep the audience entertained. But even with these elements missing, audience would still troop in to watch the parody due to the popularity of the novel. Often labeled as "Mommy Porn," the trilogy that released in 2011 has gained a large number of fans mostly among women and features a number of explicit scenes of bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism often called BDSM.
The trilogy that includes "Fifty Shades of Grey," "Fifty Shades Darker," and "Fifty Shades Free," is largely based in Seattle and has been written on the lines of "The Twilight Saga" but with an erotic element to it. The novel that was first released in the form of an e-book became so popular that it was later released in paperback. The novel has sold almost 60 million copies worldwide, even leaving the Harry Potter series behind.
"50 Shades! The Musical" will play in NYC, Jan. 11 and 12 at The Gramercy Theater and tickets are priced at $39.50 to $49.50 and in New Jersey, Jan. 13.
