A two-day event by Julien's Auctions to sell personal items and memorabilia belonging to Swedish actress and international icon Greta Garbo has fetched $1.6 million, according to the Huffington Post. The amount is said to be three times more than the estimated number.

The icon's sunglasses were sold for $13,750, Louis Vuitton steamer trunk for $37,500 and Ferragamo shoes for $8,125. Other items that went under the hammer; a velvet black turban for $12,800, an antique gold pocket knife for $8,960, a Maltese cross brooch for $13,750, a jewelry set for $9,600 and a Valentina Ottoman silk overcoat $11,520. The leather driving caps that Garbo wore for the 1924 car ad were sold for $15,000.

Apart from her favorite handbags, a platform bed that the late actress designed with Swedish carvings was also put up for sale. The auction also fetched a massive $15,000 for a U.S. passport Garbo held issued in 1964.

The auction house had put Garbo's belongings like clothing, jewelry and accessories (800 items in total) up for auction, which fetched an astounding response. These items were with Garbo's family members for numerous years who decided to put it up for auction in August 2012.

"Greta Garbo commanded Marilyn Monroe prices," Reuters quoted Martin Nolan, the executive director of the Beverly Hills auction house as saying. "Her beauty, extraordinary screen presence and fashion trending style were proven to be timeless."

Garbo was a successful and renowned actress who received four Academy Award nominations. She never married nor had children and lived alone due to which fans frequently thought her as mysterious. The actress successfully battled breast cancer but lost her life to pneumonia and renal failure in 1990 aged 84.
