Matt Damon has finally spoken out about gay rumors surrounding his friendship with Ben Affleck in an interview with the Playboy magazine. The actor has constantly been quizzed about the duo's friendship and has been asked if he was gay. Damon till now never defended the friendship but the actor probably got tired of being dragged into the controversy.
"I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn't want to offend my friends who were gay," Damon said in the interview. "As if being gay were some kind of f--king disease. It put me in a weird position in that sense."
Damon and Ben Affleck rose to fame with the 1997 drama "Good Will Hunting" and have been surrounded by gay rumors since then. The actors are good friends and have remained so since the film.
Damon has spoken about the issue in the wake of his upcoming film "Behind the Candelabra," in which he plays the role of Scott Thorson, lover of celebrated pianist Liberace played by Michael Douglas.
Damon also mentioned that besides the racy scenes where the actor will be seen making out with Douglas, the film also has a lot of substance. The movie is said to shed light on a real relationship that leads to marriage even before gay marriages were existent or legal.
"The fact that Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGeneres can come out so beautifully and powerfully, and it's a big f***ing deal that it turns out nobody gives a s***," he added. "If Liberace were alive today, everybody would love his music and nobody would care what he did in his private life. Like with Elton John."
He also explained how the late Heath Ledger inspired him through his role in the film "Brokeback Mountain".
